Social Audit

social-auditSocial accounts build similar discipline as regards to its social mandate within a social enterprise as does the financial accounting within an ordinary enterprise. It is a very useful tool for the organization to assess whether the activities are aligned to the mission and how well the objectives have been achieved.

The mission of Industree Foundation has been “to enhance, protect, create and secure artisanal livelihoods through socially, inclusive, economically and environmentally sustainable production”. The audit has been certified by Social Audit Network, India for the period of April 2011 to March 2013.

The key findings

  • To create sustainable producer owned institutions Industree Foundation clustered 12 SHGs of over hundreds of artisans and formed them into Producer Company. Through Producer Company, now artisans will be able to get social security as well as access to better financial instruments. These groups have collectively supplied goods worth crores in the last year across markets.
  • The SHGs which were trained previously were formed into groups and production was initiated. 9 new groups in states of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan and Orissa were formed and linked to markets.
  • Working capital was accessed for these groups by partnering with social finance organizations. The groups were also linked to mainstream bank credit facilities like Bill Discounting, Cash Credit, Overdraft.
  • Skill trainings were provided to hundreds of artisans and large numbers of new designs were developed. Some of these designs have been incorporated by exporters/retailers and orders were received for the same.
  • Industree has been a pioneer in the field of natural fibres. Looking at its capacity and depth of knowledge, Commonwealth Partnered with Industree to form a global network for natural fibres “Global Natural Fibres Forum”.
  • The trainings were imparted in the African Countries for economic utilization of fibres and addressing the issues of poverty alleviation through creating livelihoods at bottom of the pyramid. The trainings were done in Zambia, Mozambique and consultancy provided in Tanzania.
